Why buy a mechanical Russian watch?

Sekonda are a United Kingdom brand (as distinct from a manufacturer). In 1993 they started sourcing their watches from Asia, but before that they were from Russia / the U.S.S.R.

I have two of these earlier watches. Both are quartz. The one shown here is particularly slender, the case being not much thicker than the domed plastic crystal.

What I don't understand is why if they could make quartz watches back then, the vast majority of Russian watches now are mechanical. I'm glad that this is the case, because I love mechanical watches (automatics in particular) - but I would have thought that quartz would have taken over due to its lower cost.
